In August 1942, the U.S. Navy “hopped” to Guadalcanal and landed the First Marine Division. Months of bitter fighting on land, air and sea ensued. In February 1943, the U.S. captured the island. Japanese Major General Kiyotake Kawaguchi later pointed to Guadalcanal as the “graveyard of the Japanese army.”
